Walkers take on coastal trek

-

A determined group of walkers who tackled 50 miles of the rugged Fife coastline in just two days have helped raise more than £40,000 for charity.

The walkers were part of brain tumour charity brainstrust’s Follow the Seagulls challenge, which saw three groups set off on 50-mile hikes from Dundee, Whitby in north Yorkshire and on the Isle of Wight.

The charity works to support 60,000 people across the UK living with a brain tumour.

Many taking part had their own personal reasons for doing it. Fiona Watt, who took part in the Scottish walk, joined the challenge after her mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

She said: ‘I think that until you go through this, you can never understand what it’s like.

“It’s so important that we raise funds to help people just like us who are going through this every day across the country. That’s why I chose to take part in the Follow the Seagulls walk, so I can give something back.”

Every year around 11,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour, including 500 children and young people.

More than 5,000 people die from a brain tumour every year.

Will Jones, chief executive of brainstrust, said: ‘We’d just like to say a big thank you to the people who walked for us – they are true superheroes.

“I know there were a few blisters and aching legs at the end, but we’re so grateful for their commitment to our charity.”
