Levein reveals just why he signed Saints striker

-

Craig Levein revealed one of the attractions of signing experienced striker Steven MacLean was that he “has never been able to run”.

Levein also dismissed concerns over MacLean’s long-term knee issues after moving for the 35-year-old.

MacLean, who was advised not to play on artificial pitches following knee surgery, signed a two-year pre-contract deal with Hearts this week after scoring 53 goals in 199 appearances for St Johnstone.

“I have always liked him, I think he’s a fantastic football player,” Levein said.

“It sounds a bit strange, but I like the fact he has never been able to run. A lot of the time strikers deteriorate when they lose pace. His game is not about pace, so it’s not going to make any difference to his performances.

“So I know I’m getting a level of performance that will be consistent over the next two seasons.

“He’s got problems with his knees. The good thing is he has had problems with his knees all his life. So he can manage that situation.

“I am aware of his injury problems but I just feel he is a good player and the right type to have, who can affect the game in the Scottish Premiership.”

Hearts continued preparing for next season with Anthony McDonald following fellow teenager Harry Cochrane in signing a new three-year deal after Cambridge striker Uche Ikpeazu agreed a summer switch.

The 23-year-old former Reading player has scored 13 goals for the Sky Bet League Two side this season.

“Uche is a young lad, it’s a bit of a gamble,” Levein said.

“I like the story he has been at bigger clubs then has kind of fallen a little bit and hit the bottom, with no disrespect. And I expect him to work his way back up again, and hopefully we have called it right.”

Hearts face Rangers in the Ladbrokes Premiership tomorrow but Levein was reluctant to discuss his hosts’ problems after they suspended Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace.

“All I know is that for any of these things to make Rangers feel more uncomfortable, we have to play well,” he said.
