Council secures funding to help with revamp of North Street

-

Fife Council’s Town Centre Development Unit has secured more than £500,000 of funding to spruce up Glenrothes.

Local authority funding, boosted by Sustrans Scotland’s Community Links programme, is being invested in making North Street a more attractive place to work and shop.

The investment will see the site of the demolished ninestorey Glenrothes House transformed into a green space and the paved area in front of Fife House turned into a piazza.

Other improvements include traffic calming measures, cycle storage facilities and seating.

Councillor Altany Craik, convener of the economy, tourism, strategic planning and transportation committee, said: “As Glenrothes celebrates its 70th birthday this year, this is excellent news for local communities and businesses.

“The funding supports our vision to create a town centre that can be enjoyed by local people and visitors alike.

“Our new and improved town centre will provide opportunities for socialising, space to hold events and be accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The council is committed to supporting the regeneration of Glenrothes town centre and I’m looking forward to seeing the completion of this very exciting development.”

The work is aimed at complementing other town centre projects currently under way including the £10 million redevelopment of the old CISWO club site, which was razed to make way for a Marks and Spencer Food Hall and Tony Macaroni restaurant.

Atmore Properties Limited and contractor Easy Living Developments are working on the North Street site, with the CISWO now in South Street.
