Learner driver sped from police

-

A learner driver who led police on a high speed car chase through the streets of Levenmouth has appeared in court.

Daniel Fernandez pled guilty to a charge of dangerous driving while uninsured when he appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Friday.

The 27-year-old, who only held a provisional licence, came to the attention of the police as he drove his silver Peugeot 206 on Riverside Road in Leven on December 9, 2016.

Officers noticed the exhaust on the vehicle was not properly secured and attempted to pull him over using their blue lights.

Fernandez slowed the van down and appeared to be stopping but then accelerated off at a high speed away from the police car.

The learner driver was followed by officers who watched him break the speed limit in the 30pmh zone.

Fernandez, who had two other men in the van at the time, overtook other cars on the opposite side of the carriageway and forced other drivers to take evasive action.

The court heard how he then drove over speed bumps at a high speed which caused the loose exhaust to drag on the ground, causing sparks.

The depute fiscal told Sheriff Pino Di Emidio how police then lost sight of the driver before finding him at an address on Shore Street in Buckhaven a short while later.

Fernandez was disqualified and will be sentenced on May 18.
