Bright sparks set up new contractor

- Rob Mclaren

The collapse of Dundee firm Scottish Electric Group led to the formation of a rapidly growing electrical and plumbing company in the city.

Dave Page, Grant McConnachie and Martin Hay formed PME (Dundee) Ltd in September after learning of the collapse of the major electrical company which employed 99 people in Dundee.

The trio, who previously worked together at Dundee electrical firm McGill, now have ambitious plans to expand their Baird Avenue company.

Mr Page said: “I was retired but when Scottish Electric closed their doors, I was speaking to Grant and we thought ‘there must be a market here’.

“Between the three directors we have 40 years of managerial experience at the top.

“We have picked up a lot of work and now have seven employees and want to keep growing.

“We are getting more electrical work than we envisaged. It’s taken off quickly through word of mouth.”

The company has received support from Business Gateway in Dundee and the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust.

The firm has taken on two apprentices and plans to continue to do this annually.

“We want the youth of Dundee to benefit from the company,” Mr Page added. “It was one of the main reasons I came out of retirement.”
