Strathie end campaign on a low as Glens snatch victory
Strathmore rounded off an impressive season on a low note when they went down 31-27 at home to Glenrothes.
The hosts, who had already secured the runners-up spot in the league, led 13-3 at half-time after James Lockhart opened the scoring in 11 minutes and Darren Bell also crossed the whitewash, while Lee Alexander landed a penalty and Kain Duguid kicked three points for the visitors.
Dave Vernon extended Strathie’s lead and they later added a further score from Glenn Feighan, with Alexander booting both conversions.
However, that was not enough to hold off a determined Glenrothes side and the Fifers snatched a hard-earned victory through tries from Dylan Doyle, Gavin Emerson, David Gray and Ross Hutchison, all of them converted by Duguid.
Dunfermline continued their impressive late season form and extended their unbeaten run to eight matches when they returned from Thurso with a 31-27 victory over newly-crowned champions Caithness to their credit.
The Fifers eased into an 8-0 lead early in the game but the home side rallied and looked to have the game firmly under control when they reached halftime with a 27-8 lead.
However, Dunfermline had other ideas and crossed the whitewash four times to snatch a victory that has moved them into third spot although Alloa have a game in hand and could leapfrog the McKane Park men.
Grangemouth Stags clicked into gear at home to a muchchanged Alloa side, chalking up a 61-12 win.
The Division Two (Midlands) programme concluded with three high-scoring encounters that decided the fate of the sides at the bottom of the table.
Carnoustie had already secured a third-place finish before they welcomed Falkirk seconds.
The visitors emerged with a 45-24 success that means they survive at the expense of Madras whose relegation was confirmed when they went down 77-0 away to Stirling County thirds who moved up to fifth spot in the table as a result.
The day’s other fixture saw Kinross end the campaign on appositive note, seeing off Panmure 57-17 at the Muirs.
Division Three (Midlands) also ended on a high-scoring match when the one remaining fixture saw Aberfeldy sweep aside Waid Academy 84-0 to end the season in sixth spot.
