Young calls on Fife to end season on winning note

East Fife boss Darren Young wants his side to go out on a high.

It’s been a campaign of ups and downs for the Methil men who will meet Stranraer at Bayview in a fixture which is effectively a dead rubber.

The Fifers’ season has been largely over for a couple of weeks now with the side slipping out of the promotion mix and having enough in hand to avoid relegation.

They played their final away fixture of the season at Cliftonhill on Saturday against an Albion Rovers side locked in a relegation scrap which will go to the last game of the season.

The hosts were in dire need of the three points, and won them thanks to Sean Higgins’ goal within the first couple of minutes.

Young said: “The start we made was terrible and gave them something to hold onto.

“That was the only shot they had in the first half and we had a couple of attempts ourselves. The second half we were probably the better team and worked hard for the ball.

“Nothing really fell for us but at the same time you have to try and make things happen. You could see they had something to play for.

“We’ll hopefully have a couple of bodies back for next week and will keep on going. We want to get the three points.”

The hosts raced into an early lead when Higgins stooped to head home a Scott McLean cross at the back post.

But Kieran Wright denied Chris Duggan with his legs before Aaron Dunsmore fired narrowly wide and a Graeme Holmes’ strike was beaten away by Ryan Goodfellow.

In the second half, Michael McMullin’s long range drive trickled past the post, while Aaron Dunsmore came close for Fife before Daniel Baur’s free-kick hit the underside of the bar for Rovers.
