Only one chapter left for City to create Cinderella ending

LIVINGSTON 3 BRECHIN CITY 0

In the most cobbled together of Hollywood scripts, Brechin City’s band of part-time lovable rogues have just one game remaining in the Championship season to avoid the ignominy of not winning a fixture in the entire league campaign.

Hobbled by their part-time infrastructure, it’s been a long season for Darren Dods’ men, who again wilted in the heat of battle against Livingston as the Lions sealed second place in the Championship with a three-goal second half salvo.

You can imagine the squad are shell-shocked by what they have gone through but there was still fire in the eyes of centre-half Sean Creighton as he issued one last rallying call ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Doonhamers.

“Listen, Queen of the South are a good side as well”, the defender said. “All the teams in the league are good. Most of them are fulltime and they are sharper and fitter, and quicker.

“One thing about us is we have given it everything we can and we will certainly give it everything again next week.

“The last two weeks we have lost eight goals but I tell you what, I never saw it coming. Again, you can’t throw in that towel.

“The boys are playing for a contract with Brechin or for a contract elsewhere.”

As they have done for most of the season, Brechin went toe-totoe with their full-time opponents but ran out of steam in the second half.

Keeper Graeme Smith produced a couple of stunning saves before a lung-bursting run from newly introduced Josh Mullin set up Scott Pittman to head home the opener.

The heads went down and the defence opened up as no one marked Jackson Longridge for the second.

To be fair, Ryan Hardie’s 25-yard screamer – a goal of the season contender – was a bit harsh on the Angus outfit but there is very little compassion in the harsh realms of the Scottish game as City seek their very own Cinderella ending to the campaign.
