Body of man missing since stag weekend found in Hamburg
Ex Perth College student disappeared while on brother’s stag party
The body of missing Dundee United fan Liam Colgan has been found in Hamburg.
The former Perth College student disappeared while on his brother’s stag party in the German city in February.
A massive search led by his family and missing person’s charity the Lucie Blackman Trust was established in the days following his disappearance, which included video appeals by Dundee United club captain Willo Flood and manager Csaba Laszlo.
Liam, 29, was also known for his love of music, entertaining people across the country at open mic nights and shows with his band Old Old Wooden Ship.
He studied for a BA in music at Perth College UHI and had worked as a postal delivery worker in Inverness.
A body was recovered from the River Elbe yesterday morning and although not immediately identified as Liam, his driving licence was recovered in a jacket pocket and the clothes were those he was wearing on the night he disappeared.
Tributes appeared en masse on social media praising the musician for his gentle nature, kindness and friendship.
A Dundee United spokesperson said: “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
A spokesperson for the Lucie Blackman Trust said: “We are saddened to confirm that a body found in the River Elbe is that of Liam Colgan, missing after attending his brother’s stag weekend in the German city.
“While formal identification is yet to be carried out, Mr Colgan’s driving licence was in the pocket of the jacket, and the clothes were those he was wearing the night he disappeared.
“The trust asks that Mr Colgan’s family be given space and privacy to grieve at this difficult time.
“The charity’s chief executive, Matthew Searle, recognises that a huge amount of people will be impacted by this news. An astonishing amount of support has been apparent in this case.
“The search for Liam has been joined by thousands of people, both German and British, and we would like to thank all of them for their support.
“Our thoughts are of course with Liam’s family and friends today.”
