Hill secure third place

-

Grove Menzieshill will be third in the men’s National League after Sunday’s 3-2 win over Uddingston.

Two goals by Albert Rowling and one by Jamie Carnegie saw them through, but Uddingston narrowed the gap to a goal in the latter stages.

That followed a disappointing end to Saturday’s game when they went down 3-2 to Western Wildcats.

This time Rowling and Olly James twice gave them the lead in the first half but Wildcats twice equalised.

The match looked like ending in a draw until Wildcats struck a winner three minutes from time.

Wanderers did all they could to move out of the relegation zone.

A goal apiece by Bobby Ralph and Callum Ross saw them beat already relegated Inverleith.

Wanderers took a first half lead over potentially stronger opponents in Wildcats on Sunday but Cats, intent on securing fourth place, responded with two second half goals to take all three points.

Kelburne still lead the way by two points over Grange but the Edinburgh team significantly improved their goal difference with their sizeable win over Uddingston.

With one match left, Menzieshill have secured third place and Western Wildcats fourth.

Wanderers improved their position to seventh, one point behind Edinburgh University and one ahead of Hillhead, but still in the relegation zone for the post-league play-offs.

Perthshire’s loss to Dunfermline Carnegie was disappointing given their earlier efforts to move up the second division. Mike Robertson’s goal was just not enough.

Neither was Alex Wilson’s goal on Sunday, but with Gordonians chasing promotion, a defeat for the Perth team was not a major surprise.

Menzieshill II’s narrow win over Grange III came courtesy of a goal apiece from Sam Knight and Dave Petrie.

Wanderers II’s more emphatic win over GHK was thanks to a brace by Blair Williams and goals from Gregor Pearson and Eli Ross.
