Cats delay title party

-

The battle to be crowned Scottish women’s champions goes right to the wire after Clydesdale Western’s 2-0 victory spoiled any early celebrations for holders Edinburgh University.

The students, who were in party mode after Saturday’s 12-0 drubbing of Kelburne, have been made to wait for the point required to guarantee their third title on the spin when Ali Howie and Emma McGregor scored either side of the interval.

Wildcats went third after their unbeaten weekend in Dundee.

Saturday’s clash with Grove Menzieshill ended goalless after two excellent chances to claim victory were passed up by either side.

Sunday’s visit to Dalnacraig was more profitable as Cats’ predatory skills came to the fore with Megan Cox, McKenzie Bell, Molly Godfrey and Catriona Booth firing in while Emily Dark retaliated for MJV Wanderers.

Elsewhere Kelburne bore the brunt of Grove’s frustrations as the Ferry outfit fired in half-a-dozen without a response to remain on track for next month’s European play-offs.

Kelburne are now officially relegated, while GHK, Hillhead and Grange go into play-offs against the division two runners-up, yet to be determined.

Dundee University took a point in division two, but it was too little too late as they have already fallen through the trapdoor.

St Andrews University also lost, but have done enough to ensure safety.

Grove’s second string continued their good form in Championship 1 with Linda Anderson (2), India Fraser and Holly Duval consolidating fourth in the table.

Kinross picked up maximum points in their Championship 2 encounter with St Andrews II, Vicky Carver (2) and Catherine Wray edging the 3-2 result.
