super league: Gowfers hit seven to return to winning ways

Forfar West End remain five points adrift at the bottom of the Super League table following a defeat at home to Broxburn Athletic.

For the second week in a row West End took the lead after Jamie Montgomery put his side in front on 13 minutes.

Broxburn were level on 22 minutes through Alex Murray, and Murray scored what proved to be the winner five minutes before half-time.

Carnoustie boss Alan McSkimming was scathing of his side following their midweek defeat to Kirrie Thistle in the East of Scotland Cup but he got exactly the reaction he was after with a 7-0 demolition of Jeanfield Swifts at Riverside Stadium.

Captain Steven Cook scored with a header after just three minutes and then netted his second on 32 minutes, rifling the ball home after an audacious backheel from Ryan Dignan.

Dignan himself made it 3-0 just after half time and Ewan Buggins, with a diving header, scored the fourth on 56 minutes.

Cook completed his hat-trick on the hour from the spot after Pat Martin had been crudely hacked down in the box before Dignan made it six on 65 minutes.

A Jamie McCabe free-kick from all of 30 yards completed the rout of a sorry Jeanfield with six minutes remaining Premier League Downfield conceded a goal to Whitburn within the first minute at Downfield Park but were level after 19 minutes through Jordan Timmons.

Parity lasted just 60 seconds before the visitors went back in front and that remained the scoreline until the 65th minute when Whitburn made it 3-1.

James Thompson pulled a second back for the Spiders on 85 minutes but Whitburn made it 4-2 in stoppage time.

The chances are that Kirrie Thistle will be saved from relegation by a reorganisation of the league, but at the moment they remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League following a 3-0 defeat at Fauldhouse United, who look to be a side that will benefit from restructure as they jumped to fourth place with games in hand.

Tayport failed to take advantage of hosts Haddington Athletic being reduced to 10 men for a large amount of the second half.

Dale Robertson had put Charlie King’s side in front on 34 minutes but H adding ton equalised through Andy Jones.

Chris Cairney was shown his second yellow card on the hour and this appeared to galvanise Athletic in pushing on and scoring the winner on 67 minutes.
