City equal unenviable 126-year record

BRECHIN CITY 1 QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 5

Brechin City brought the curtain down on their Scottish Championship campaign with a heavy 5-1 defeat from Queen of the South at Glebe Park.

The main talking point before the match was whether or not City would be able to put an end to their 35-game run without a victory but sadly for them the Doonhamers cantered to an emphatic 5-1 win, leaving the Angus club in the unenviable position of matching Vale of Leven’s run of form in season 1891/92 which saw them go the entire season without a win.

Manager Darren Dods didn’t dwell too much on this grim statistic at the end of the match but was clearly disappointed with the manner in which his side had capitulated.

“We were in the game up until the half-hour mark and were battling away but Queens scored two quick goals in succession before the break which left us with an uphill struggle,” he said.

“We changed things round at half-time but then we lost a third goal and after that it was probably one of the very few times this season when the players dropped their standards. In virtually all of the games we’ve played this season we’ve kept things going right until the end and worked teams hard. The most disappointing aspect today was that we didn’t keep things going and eased off and the towel went in which is very uncharacteristic.”

“We’ll now look to freshen things up for next season, reshape the squad, work the players hard pre-season and try to get that winning mentality back. League One is an environment that most of the players are used to and we’ll give it a real go again next season.”

Two goals in five minutes before the interval from Stephen Dobbie and Lyndon Dykes gave the Doonhamers a 2-0 half-time lead and further strikes from the pair made it four with Dobbie completing his hat-trick in the 74th minute.

Sub Isaac Layne slotted home a consolation for Brechin.

Brechin’s Gary Fusco, 35, is retiring. He first joined the Glebe Park outfit in 2007 and made 310 appearances in two spells with the club.
