Bedside vigil as baby fights for life
The Tayside family of a critically ill baby are keeping a bedside vigil in Edinburgh as she fights for her life.
A small circle of relatives have been at the hospital since the weekend as police inquiries into what happened are continuing.
Police said yesterday there has been no change in the baby girl’s condition and she remains critically ill at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.
A police presence remained in St Vigeans Road in Arbroath yesterday for what is now a fourth day.
Police officers were again on guard at the front and rear of the house where the six-month-old baby was found with “unexplained” injuries on Saturday afternoon.
Police vehicles also continued to be seen in the street throughout the day.
The baby’s parents are a couple in their 20s that were living at the Arbroath address where the incident happened.
The father is from Arbroath and the baby’s mother is from Blairgowrie where her family still reside.
The family are well-known in the Perthshire town and news of what has happened has left locals shocked.
The baby’s grandmother declined to comment when approached at the family home yesterday.
It is understood the incident happened at a time when the family is already reeling from a tragedy close to home.
The baby’s great-grandfather is understood to have died recently and arrangements are being made for the funeral service.
The family are juggling those responsibilities alongside the added stress of going back and forth to Edinburgh.
An investigation is being carried out by Police Scotland, Angus Council social work department and NHS Tayside.
A 999 call was received on Saturday just before 3pm.
Mercy crews rushed to the scene and the baby was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
The injured tot was then transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh where she has remained.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “There is no change in the baby’s condition.”
