44-year-old accused of murder bid and using stun gun on a second man

A man appeared in court yesterday accused of attempting to murder a golfer with a chainsaw before using a stun gun on another man.

Joe Brown is alleged to have attacked Arthur Innes, 61, at Dundee’s Caird Park golf course at around 4pm on Wednesday.

He is said by prosecutors to have struck him repeatedly on the head and body with a chainsaw, while its engine was running.

The 44-year-old appeared in private on petition at Dundee Sheriff Court, facing a total of four charges.

It is alleged he first behaved in a threatening and abusive manner at his home address in Graham Court and at Mains Court, both Dundee, by shouting, swearing and brandishing a chainsaw.

The charge states he acted in an aggressive manner, placing those present in a state of fear and alarm.

He is accused of then assaulting Arthur Innes, 61, and repeatedly striking him on the head and body with a chainsaw, with its engine running, all to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

The attack was made in an attempt to murder him, the charge states.

Brown is then alleged to have assaulted 60-year-old Andrew Hay by repeatedly striking him on the body with an activated stun gun, attempting to punch him on the head then pushing him on the body, causing him to fall to the ground.

It is alleged that attack, in Mains Loan, caused Mr Hay injury and endangered his life.

A fourth charge alleges that, on May 2 in Mains Loan, he was in possession of a stun gun disguised as a mobile phone.

Brown is said to have been on two bail orders, from Dundee and Inverness Sheriff Courts, at the time of the alleged offences.

The 44-year-old of Graham Court, Dundee, made no plea via defence solicitor Ross Bennett during a brief hearing.

The case was continued for further examination and Brown was remanded in custody by Sheriff Christopher Shead after his lawyer made no motion for bail.

He is expected to appear in court again next week.

Around 10 police cars as well as ambulance crews raced to Caird Park, on Dundee’s northern outskirts, at around 4pm on Wednesday, following reports of a man having been attacked with a chainsaw.

Police said Mr Innes was taken to Ninewells Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries following the incident. He was released late on Wednesday and is understood to be recovering well at home.
