A six-month-old baby girl remains in a critical condition following a weekend incident in Arbroath.

Police finally left the scene on Wednesday after five days but are not disclosing any further details of the investigation.

It has also emerged that Angus councillors were advised not to make any public comment on the case, which is being carried out in joint partnership with social work and NHS Tayside.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “The current state of play is that the little one is still critical but stable. There is no further information on the investigation at the moment.

“If and when we have anything further to say about the investigation, an appropriate release will go out.”

The family of the injured baby have also declined to comment as police inquiries into what happened are continuing.

A six-month-old baby girl was rushed to hospital from a house in Arbroath on Saturday afternoon. Police officers had been standing guard at the front and rear of the house where the baby was found with “unexplained” injuries.

One neighbour said: “The police have been there constantly, at the front and back doors.

“There were police outside the house all the time at the front and back doors, taking it in shifts.

“Sometimes the police were taking bags out of the house, but that’s about it. It’s all a mystery.”

A 999 call was received on Saturday just before 3pm.

Paramedic crews went to the scene and the baby was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The injured tot was then transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh where she has remained.

The baby’s family are keeping a bedside vigil in Edinburgh as she fights for her life.

The baby’s parents are a couple in their 20s who were living at the Arbroath address where the incident happened.

The father is from Arbroath and the baby’s mother’s is from Blairgowrie where her family still live.

They are well-known in the Perthshire town and it is understood the incident happened at a time when the family is already reeling from a tragedy close to home.

The baby’s great-grandfather died recently and the family has been juggling funeral arrangements with the added stress of going back and forth to Edinburgh.

The current state of play is that the little one is still critical but stable. There is no further information on the inquiry
