“A man in Grade III should be doing something other than selling whisky at this time of day,” remarked Mr Alexander Spence, who presided over a sitting of Dundee Tribunal. The case was that of William Wilkie, wine and spirit merchant, Hilltown. The point at issue was whether he should do work of national importance and it was stated that Mr Wilkie’s public house in Hilltown particular­ly required his personal supervisio­n. It was decided, however, that he should find work.

Government members roared in the Commons when the Prime Minister told Scottish Nationalis­t MP Mrs Winifred Ewing, who asked how many official visits he had made to Scotland since October 1966, that because of the length of the answer, he would circulate it to Hansard. Mrs Ewing told him that London Government was out of touch with Scotland’s political climate. More frequent and longer visits to Scotland would acquaint him at first hand with the rapid growth for self-government.

The happy atmosphere on a May Day bank holiday turned to near tragedy in Angus when a teenage girl plunged around 50 feet in a rocky quarry. After being rushed under police escort from the scene of the incident in Kirriemuir to hospital in Dundee, the 13-year-old was last night recovering from what is understood to be a serious head injury. The girl has not been named but it is thought she may have been holidaying in the area. The fall happened at a disused quarry in the Hillrise area.

Police are investigat­ing after treasured memorial plaques were set alight at Dundee Crematoriu­m. Several fire-damaged plaques had to be removed after being targeted by vandals. Four skylight panels were also smashed outside the chapel. It is understood the fire and damage to the crematoriu­m lights occurred during two separate incidents. A Dundee Crematoriu­m spokesman said: “Some wall plaques have been damaged by the fire but we will replace these at no cost to the families.”
