Woman arrested and charged with baby’s attempted murder

The injured infant remains in a serious condition in hospital, say police

A woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a baby suffered serious injuries in Arbroath.

Police have confirmed a 22-year-old woman is due to appear at court in Forfar today.

It comes after a six-month-old baby girl was taken to hospital after she was found with injuries in Arbroath.

Police say they believe the infant was hurt on or around Saturday April 28.

Detective Inspector Scott Fotheringh­am said a joint child protection investigat­ion was being carried out by Police Scotland, the NHS and social workers.

He added: “A report will be submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and the woman is expected to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court today.

“The baby remains in a serious condition in hospital.”

People living in and around St Vigeans Road area described seeing a large police presence outside a property on April 28.

Officers remained at the scene for five days, but would not disclose any further details of the investigat­ion.

It later emerged that Angus councillor­s had been advised not to make any public comment on the case.

One neighbour said: “There was police outside the house all the time at the front and back doors, taking it in shifts.

“Sometimes the police were taking bags out of the house, but that’s about it. “It’s all a mystery.” At the time, police said a 999 call had been received on the Saturday just before 3pm.

Ambulance crews were sent to the scene and the baby was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The injured tot was then transferre­d to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
