Captain thinks his squad has what it takes to ascend

-

Club captain Eric Watson and his Cove Rangers team-mates are steeling themselves for a physical battle as they bid to win promotion to League 2 this afternoon.

Cowdenbeath stand between the Highland League champions and a place in the SPFL after a goalless draw at Harlaw Park last weekend.

The Blue Brazil may have home advantage for the deciding leg, but experienced central defender Watson insists confidence is high in the Cove camp that they can finish the job.

He said: “We are really looking forward to this game and it just can’t come round quickly enough for ourselves.

“Last weekend their centre forward Jordyn Sheerin caused us problems.

“He seemed to be their only point of attack as they hit the ball long to him looking for him to either flick it on or hold it up.

“He was good at what he did and he’s a big physical lad, but I think we managed to get to grips with him and he tired the longer the game went on when our superior fitness told in the second half.

“We pride ourselves on our defending. These last couple of seasons I think we’ve done exceptionally well at the back.

“There have been games where we decided to just sit and soak up pressure but with the attacking options we have available, if we can lure them in it will leave a bit more space in behind for us to capitalise on.”

If Cove were to be promoted it would be a dream come true for the skipper, who added: “If that were to happen it would certainly be the biggest thing in my career.

“At the age of 36, time is probably ticking on that for me but if we could achieve that objective at Central Park I don’t think that could be topped, not for myself anyway.

“We have had a truly fantastic season and we definitely don’t want it to end on a sour note.”
