All to play for in play-offs

-

Grove Menzieshill will be away to Kelburne in today’s semi-final play-offs in a bid to land a place in Europe for next season.

Having finished third in the league part of the competition they will play second-placed Kelburne for a place in the final at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre tomorrow.

Grange winning the league title may have worked out well for Menzieshill as they have had some poor results against Grange recently.

Grange will surely be too good for fourth placed Western Wildcats in the other semi-final.

The final winners will be Scotland’s number one representatives in Europe with Grange guaranteed to be at least the second, having won the league.

There is also an almighty relegation battle over the weekend.

Dundee Wanderers came so close to gaining sixth place. One more goal in their 5-4 defeat to Clydesdale would have seen them avoid this weekend’s trauma.

To ask the teams in seventh and eight places to be involved in relegation play-offs is frankly ridiculous.

Only the second top second division team is allowed in these play-offs for promotion.

Gordonians and Watsonians fought out a tremendous battle for the second division title and outright promotion, Gordonians winning on goal difference.

That makes Watsonians formidable opponents for Wanderers, but at least the Dundee team have home advantage, playing at Dalnacraig.

The winner of this match will be in Division 1 next season and the loser will have to play the loser of Hillhead v Uddingston tomorrow to avoid being in Division 2 next season.
