Young shepherds urged to flock to competition
Young sheep enthusiasts can test their skills and knowledge in the “next generation” Shepherd of the Year competition at Scotsheep 2018.
Competitors will be asked to carry out five of six designated tasks which include prime lamb selection, shearing two sheep, ATV handling, demonstrating their knowledge of correct foot care techniques – such as weight of ewes for worming and examples of injection sites – answer questions on flock management and health and show skills in sheepdog handling by gathering, moving and penning sheep.
The competition is open to young people up to the age of 26 residing in Scotland and they do not need to be working as a shepherd.
Event organiser Wallace Boyd said the competition is designed to test the practical skills and knowledge of sheep of those taking part, as well as their broader knowledge of the sheep industry throughout the UK and Europe.
The competition will start at 8.30am with the presentation of prizes taking place at 3.30pm. The winner will be presented with a trophy and cash prize of £300. Other cash prizes are offered for class placings, including £200 for second, £100 for third, £40 for fourth, £30 for fifth and £20 for sixth. The highest-placed competitor aged under 21 will receive £100.

Scotsheep will take place at Kings Arms Farm, Ballantrae, South Ayrshire, on Wednesday May 30.
