Three imitation firearms have been stolen after a break-in at the army cadet hall in Newport.

Although they have the appearance of an SA80 assault rifle, the items are not functioning weapons and are used in training.

Detective Inspector Chris Mill, from Levenmouth Police Station, said officers were treating the thefts with the “utmost priority” and a dedicated team was working to track down the stolen equipment.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen, or been offered any of the equipment, or can help us trace their whereabouts,” he said.

“I would specifically appeal to anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the Victoria Street area over the course of the week or who has any information that can help us trace those responsible.”

The break-in at the Cadet Centre on Victoria Street happened between noon on Wednesday May 2 and 11am on Wednesday the following week.

Police said whoever was responsible had forced their way into the rear of the premises.

In addition to the imitation firearms, a quantity of cash was also taken.

An Army spokesperson said: “We are aware of a theft at the army cadet hall in Newport-on-Tay, Fife.

“Any further queries should be directed to the police.”

Those with information are asked to contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 1353 of May 9, or make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555.

We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been offered any of the equipment. DET INSP CHRIS MILL
