Lies to police wasted officers’ time and cost the taxpayer

-

A Fife man lied to the police by telling them his car had been stolen when he had crashed it off an embankment.

Mostafizur Rahman was involved in the road traffic accident on the B974, between Clatterin Brig and Fettercairn in Aberdeenshire, on April 14.

The 40-year-old, from Fod Street in Dunfermline, called the police at 8.33am telling them a car had gone off the road.

But just five minutes later, he called officers again and reported that his car had been stolen from outside his home.

Officers attended at 10.45am but were told by the mother of Rahman’s ex-partner that the car had not been parked there the night before as he had claimed.

Rahman told the police he did not know who was driving his car when it was involved in the accident.

Mr Rahman appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court and admitted filing a false report which caused officers to waste their time and services at public expense.

The waiter also admitted failing to give information to the police about the driver involved in an incident on the B974.

Defence solicitor Sarah Meehan said: “He can only explain his actions as that he panicked having had the collision. He appreciates it was extremely foolish.”

She said he was a waiter in Kinross but was about to start a job in Aberdeen.

Sheriff Derek Reekie was unimpressed by what he heard.

“He’s gone to quite elaborate lengths to deceive and conceal this incident. I’m concerned about this whole story. I have an uneasy feeling about all of this.”

Sentence was deferred for reports until June 6.
