Warriors have got to be better, says Rennie

-

Glasgow head coach Dave Rennie admitted there was a tinge of disappointment about how their season had finished after defeat in the Guinness PRO14 semifinals.

The Warriors were well beaten 28-13 by Scarlets at Scotstoun on Friday night to end what had looked like it could be a dream debut campaign for Rennie in defeat.

After arriving from Chiefs last summer, Rennie led Glasgow to 10 successive wins at the start of the domestic campaign as they established themselves as one of the dominant sides in the PRO14, but they fell away towards the end of the season and finished without a trophy.

“We have played some good footie along the way and I’ve really enjoyed my time with a great bunch of men who have worked really hard,” the New Zealander said.

“The aspiration is always to win titles and we are disappointed not to be in the race next week.

“We will look back at the areas we need to be better because we fell short (on Friday night).”

The Warriors’ campaign seemed to hit a buffer at the turn of the year after their exit from the European Champions Cup and with the start of the NatWest 6 Nations, which saw the squad disrupted by international call-ups.

Since the start of 2018, they have lost six matches and won just three league games, and Rennie admitted their fast start to the season had ended up hindering their form of late after they qualified for the end-of-season play-offs early.

He said: “Maybe once we qualified there wasn’t the same sort of sting with transitioning all our internationals back in and so on, but looking back in the last few weeks, you have to give credit to Edinburgh and the same again here.

“We have lost a lot of games recently and we know we have to be better.”
