Scottish athlete Laura Muir is celebrating another win after passing her exams to achieve her dream of becoming a vet.

The middle distance star runner passed the final exams for her veterinary degree at Glasgow University.

The 25-year-old was given the news as she visited Six Flags theme park in Los Angeles ahead of competing in a race there this weekend.

Animal lover Muir, from Milnathort, Kinross-shire, sat out the Commonwealth Games earlier this year to finish her studies.

She posted on Twitter: “So I have some exciting news .... I PASSED MY FINALS!!! I’m going to be a VET!!! #drmuir.”

The runner was soon flooded with messages of congratulations from friends and colleagues.

Fellow Scots athlete Eilidh Doyle said: “Never in doubt! I like to think my never ending questions and lack of tortoise knowledge at the European Indoors in 2013 played a part.”

Glasgow-based vet Niall Connell said: “I was delighted to be at the Examiner’s meeting today to hear all the great news. Congratulations, Dr Muir! Welcome to the profession. “Best wishes for an amazing career.” Glasgow University’s official Twitter page posted: “Many congrats to @lauramuiruns & all our Vet students receiving their final exam results! So proud of you all!”

Muir has previously told how combining her studies with training for events had left her drained.

She said: “I was absolutely shattered so I have been in bed early every night. “I think it went okay. “They were finals so it was never going to be easy.”

She added: “They are both very important to me.

“I have spent a lot of time on running these last couple of years, but it is very important to me that I get my degree.

“Anything can happen in sport. You could break your leg and that could be it.

“You have to have that back-up plan. Veterinary was at the forefront of what I wanted to do from a very young age and it is still very important to me,” she explained.

Muir won double gold in the 1,000m and 3,000m at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade last year.

Earlier this month she was named an official ambassador for the European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019 which take place March 1-3.
