Scotland v England at Bayview for Toby’s cancer charity

-

A squad of Fife footballers will compete in a Scotland v England match tomorrow in the name of 12-year-old Toby Etheridge, who recently won his battle with cancer.

The fixture at Bayview Stadium will feature a team of talented amateurs, including Richie Lawson, Keir Macaulay and Neale Smith, taking on charity side AC Wollaton.

It will raise money for Toby’s Magical Journey, the charity run by Toby’s family to support young people fighting cancer.

Organiser Steve Gilfillan said: “We are hoping to get as many people to come along as possible to make it a fantastic atmosphere.”

Toby’s three years of chemotherapy came to an end in April.

Despite his own ill health the Cupar youngster has already raised more than £56,000.

Steve, of AM Sports Tours based in Cupar, said: “When I heard his story of his battle with cancer at such a young age but on top of that his support for other kids in the same situation, it was extremely humbling.

“I wanted to support him in the best way I can.”

Steve was told about AC Wollaton by a friend in Nottingham. The team is based there and raises money for the children’s cancer ward at Queen’s Medical Centre.

He said: “We were talking about the concept of AC Wollaton charity and I was very impressed with the way it was run and the cause it supported.

“We then got talking about arranging an event up here and eight months later we are where we are now.

“Each player has to raise £100 to play and most have been supported by local businesses which is amazing.”

Entry is free, kick-off 2pm.
