Kean eyes Scottish title shot

-

Dundee boxer Paul Kean has spoken of his delight at winning his first title belt following five months of intense preparation.

The 25-year-old outpointed dangerous Irish fighter Jay Byrne for the BUI Celtic Super-Welterweight championship at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow on Friday night.

More than 100 fans travelled through from the City of Discovery for the fight, including Kean’s uncle, former Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon.

Now, Kean, who is a former world kickboxing champion, has set his sights on the Scottish title, with the fighter hopeful that the contest might take place in his home city.

He said: “I am delighted to have won the belt. He was a tough opponent who has been in with some top guys, including Olympians.

“He is in your face constantly and it was the first time I have done eight rounds. It was also really hot in the venue but I felt I was moving well and still picking my shots by the end.”

Kean added: “I am a switch hitter anyway and I had been working on it. I was throwing straight right hands when I switched to orthodox and then sometimes I would switch to straight lefts.

“I thought I was tricking him well. I was really focused and I had trained hard for the fight. I would also like to thank all my fans for all their support.

“That’s eight fights now and I have taken 100 through every time from Dundee.

“Hopefully now I can get the Scottish title fight on again with Stefan Sanderson.

“He was unwell this time but hopefully we can get that in September if he is still up for it.”
