“Regarding the recent photograph of Sir Jimmy Shand and his band,” emails Ian Cruickshanks of Kirriemuir, “out of sight behind Sir Jimmy is the pianist in the band, Jimmy Scott from Clackmannan.

“He told me a few years ago that this picture was taken in Glamis Castle while the band were performing on the BBC “Your correspondent Brian Townsend is not the only one who likes Highland Park,” emails Jim Stewart of Broughty Ferry. “I made this nesting box from a 30-year-old Highland Park container and the great tits have been nesting here for the last few years. It’s probably the most expensive house they have ever lived in!” television show The Kilt is My Delight. Archive footage pops up now and again on TV, but only less than a minute. The date was between 1961 and 1964.

“Sir Jimmy’s accordion has had the large letters of HOHNER (the accordion manufacturer) taped over on the front as the BBC claimed it was in breach of their advertising guidelines though you can see the smaller HOHNER letters on the piano accordion being played by Bert Shorthouse.

“The drummer is Owen McCabe from Dundee, the fiddler is Syd Chalmers of Forfar, the bass player is Stan Saunders of Dollar and, out of sight, on the left will be George McKelvey from Dundee and the aforementioned Jimmy Scott on the right. Jimmy Scott is the only one of this band still with us and still playing.”
