Leven businesses back ongoing bid to reopen rail link

-

More than 50 businesses have signed up to a charter supporting the reinstatement of the Levenmouth rail link.

Companies across the area are being encouraged to show they are behind the reopening of the railway between Leven and Thornton.

Campaigners say they want to demonstrate to transport chiefs the scheme is universally wanted.

The charter was launched at a conference in April when the rail link bid was discussed.

Members of Levenmouth Rail Campaign (LMRC) say it is important that businesses have their say on what better transport links will mean to them.

They also plan to speak to other groups, such as clubs and voluntary organisations.

LMRC chairman Eugene Clarke said the group’s aim was to ensure Transport Scotland is left in no doubt about the benefits a railway would bring to Levenmouth.

He said: “We want people to walk down Leven High Street and see our logo in every window. We’re getting pretty close to that now.

“We’re meeting with Fife Council in early July to discuss how best we can connect Levenmouth businesses with the Borders businesses so we can make sure we’re ready to take full advantage of the line once the decision is announced.”

The drive to drum up support comes as locals are being encouraged to take part in ongoing research by consultants Peter Brett Associates.

Transport Scotland is carrying out an online survey as part of the L even mouth Sustainable Transport Study, part of which looks at the need for a rail link.

The body is working closely with Fife Council to identify opportunities and challenges on the existing local transport network.

The comments received from the public will be taken into account when a final report is presented later this year and organisers want as many people as possible to take part.
