Anti-smoking drive will see youngsters potter about

-

Teenagers are being encouraged to get creative as part of a new smoking prevention strategy.

Forgan Arts Centre in Newport has organised a free ceramic art course aimed at stopping youngsters turning to tobacco.

Run in conjunction with teen smoking prevention group Prevent, three sessions will take place at the centre and at the East Nook Studio in St Andrews.

They will be encouraged to share their “prevent” message through clay in whatever way they choose.

They can incorporate drawings and text into their creations using sculptures, wall hangings, vessels or whatever their imagination can conjure up, before their work is exhibited.

Forgan Arts Centre co-ordinator Alana Peden said: “We hope to focus on the positivity of not smoking and welcome tongue-in-cheek humour and wacky ideas to share your thoughts.

“We will encourage the young person to take pictures of their progress, sketches, ideas, thoughts and to post words and visuals on a digital page created by the group for the project.”

Pieces will be available to take home after the exhibition.

There are eight free places available at each venue and participants must be able to attend all three sessions at their chosen place, as well as the exhibition.

The Newport sessions take place on July 2, 9 and 16 and the St Andrews workshops are on July 23 and 30 and August 6.

The exhibition is on Sunday August 26 from 11am to 2pm.
