A daredevil bungee jumper from Perth has become one of the first people ever to dive off the highest footbridge in the world.

Brave Callum Lewis, 25, got the once in a lifetime opportunity to bungee jump off the 260 metre-high Zhangiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge in China after helping set it up.

And while he admits his mum thinks he’s a “bit mental”, jumpmaster Callum says it’s the “best feeling in the world”.

The jump site took four weeks to complete and on May 26 the thrillseeker was allowed to trial the daunting jump.

The company Go! Bungy China hosted a freestyle bungee jump event that was broadcast live on Chinese TV.

This event attracted daredevils from across the globe, including the UK, Australia and Russia as well as Callum, who is originally from the Fair City.

The Zhangjiajie Grand Glass Bridge was finished in 2016 and stretches 430 metres between two cliffs in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

Callum said: “It’s such a weird thing. It’s like you have a lot of time to think during the first five to six seconds then after the cord stretch, you have about 14 seconds until it stops. I was quite happy and confident when I was asked to do it. A bit nervous to start with but it’s the best feeling in the world.

“You get to see this view and sometimes, I don’t know what it is, but you just look around and while you are falling you wonder when it will stop.

“On my first jump, I felt like it wasn’t going to stop.”

Despite no official opening date for the site, it will be the world’s highest public bungee jump.

Callum, who has a certificate in outdoor adventure leadership, previously worked for Highland fling Bungee at Killiecrankie.

The young Scot worked there as a jumpmaster until April before moving to China.

When asked about the opportunity to take on the challenge of creating the jump, Callum said it was a chance he could not turn down.

He added: “I’m not sure why but I got contacted at the end of January and I knew this would be something I would be interested in.”

Last year adrenaline junkie Callum took part in the 134-metre Nevis bungee jump in New Zealand.

He said: “That was scary at the time but I’ll keep on going higher.

“The nerves that you get is something that will never go away.

“It just has a risk factor to it, so I feel like I need to try it.”

Callum has also worked on sites for thrill-seekers in New Zealand and Japan but says his mum still thinks he is a “bit mental”.

He said: “I asked her to come and try it when I first started jumping about three years ago. She didn’t want to do it but my sister and dad tried it.”

I was quite happy and confident when I was asked to do it–abit nervous to start with but it’s the best feeling in the world. CALLUM LEWIS
