DUATHLON SILVER FOR LAURA Dundee Hawkhill Harrier Laura Oudney won a silver medal in the female 30-34 age group at the World Duathlon Championships in Denmark.

Her husband Graeme was 11th in the male 30-34 age group.

Both have only competed in one previous Duathlon and were recovering after completing the Edinburgh Half-Ironman last weekend. Graeme is an ex-Dundee Hawkhill Harrier and a former Scottish 800m champion.

Both were competing for GB in Denmark.

GOLD FOR KANE

Kane Elliott (Falkirk Victoria) claimed the 1,500m gold medal at the European Under 18 Championships in Hungary.

Elliott led the charge for GB on what turned out to be a ‘Super Saturday’ as the team won four golds.

Elliott won the 1,500m in a Championship record of 3:55.26, hitting the front of the field early on and appeared comfortable, dictating the pace for most of the race. However, on the final lap, he was overtaken by three athletes with 200m to go. It looked as if he was about to fade but nevertheless, he showed great spirit to move out into lane two as he hit the home straight to make sure he wasn’t boxed in. He outsprinted the Hungarian athlete in the final few metres to claim the title.

A shocked Elliott said: “It feels amazing. It was a very tough race but I’m so happy I had enough to get the win. It is an unbelievable feeling to be European champion. I am not sure I can get my head around it at the moment, it’ll take some time to sink in. “I knew I had to move out (with 100m to go) otherwise I was going to get boxed in so I had no other choice. I knew I had enough left in the tank so I just gave everything I had to get

a medal.”

The gold rush continued as World U18 leader in the high jump, Dominic Ogbechie (Highgate H.), delivered his best when it mattered to claim the European gold medal clearing 2.16m. After breaking the 110m hurdles championship record on two occasions Sam Bennett (Basildon) clocked

a third championship record also setting an outright British U18 record of 13.19 seconds with a legal following wind after an advantageous tailwind denied him earlier in the semi-finals. Keely Hodgkinson (Leigh H.) took the girl’s 800m gold taking the inside lane and holding her line before powering away with 200m to go. No one could go with her change of pace and the gap kept opening up as she won in a championship record of 2:04.86, outsprinting Ireland’s Sophie O’Sullivan, daughter of former world champion Sonia.

The David Shepherd Memorial Glamaig Hill Race from Sligachan Hotel, Skye was the latest counter in the Scottish Hill Runners Championship.
