Woman fell down stairs as guilty husband tried to grab her phone

A struggle over a mobile phone resulted in a Fife woman being assaulted by her husband and falling down the stairs.

She suffered substantial bruising to her body in the incident in Dunfermline and was taken to hospital.

Grant Hutton, 32, an information technology consultant, of Fillan Street, appeared from custody at Dunfermline Sheriff Court, following the incident at his home.

He admitted that on June 22, he assaulted his partner Lyssa Hutton by struggling with her and causing her to fall down a flight of stairs to her injury.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said the couple have been married for around five years.

On this night, Hutton became agitated about a message his wife received on her phone and tried to get it from her.

“He was pulling the phone, she tried to pull away from him and she fell down a flight of stairs,” added the depute.

“She tried to leave and phoned her parents to collect her.”

She was taken to Forth Valley Hospital for treatment where she was found to have “substantial bruising” to her back, knee and foot.

When police officers arrived at the house, Hutton told them he had “lost the plot” and that he felt he was “going mental”.

Defence solicitor Stephen Morrison told the court that his client very much regretted what had happened.

“He’s appalled by his own behaviour,” Mr Morrison went on to say.

The court was told Hutton’s wife was now living at an address in Dunblane.

Sheriff Allison McKay deferred sentence on Hutton until October 10 for him to be of good behaviour.
