A man killed in a road accident in Fife had lost his brother in a fishing tragedy in the Forth.

Martin Buchan, who was 29 and lived in Coaltown of Wemyss, was yesterday named as the victim of a road crash which happened on the A911 Windygates to Glenrothes road in the early hours of Monday.

Less than three years ago, he had mourned the death of his brother, Jason, who was one of three men who perished while out on a fishing trip off the Wemyss coast in August 2015.

In a statement released through Police Scotland, relatives spoke of their “total devastation” after being struck by tragedy for a second time.

“We feel total devastation for the passing of our much loved son, Martin. He has left so many aching hearts behind,” they said.

“We would like to say how grateful we are for the tremendous support from friends and family who have been by our side helping us through this tragedy.

“We would like to ask for privacy from the media while we come to terms with our loss.”

Martin was fatally injured when his blue Ford Focus left the road near the junction to Balfour Place, Milton of Balgonie and veered into a field.

A member of the public raised the alarm at around 3.40am.

When emergency services arrived they were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the younger brother of Jason, 35, who died alongside Birrell Stewart, 30, and David Stead, 47, when their boat overturned while they were out fishing.

In February 2016, a memorial plaque bearing their names was unveiled in the men’s home village of East Wemyss.

Martin was the second person to be killed on the A911 in the space of four months.

On March 6, Cardenden man David Moore was fatally injured in an accident near the Windygates junction.

It is believed Mr Moore had been walking along the A911 towards Glenrothes when he was struck from behind by an Audi at around 10.35pm.

Mr Moore was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff.

We feel total devastation for the passing of our much loved son, Martin. He has left so many aching hearts behind.
