100 years ago

The British monitors have been doing wonders on the Adriatic coast in helping the Italian advance, which is penetratin­g into the heart of Albania. This will not only have a great military bearing but also a great political effect throughout the Balkans. Emphasis is also being laid upon the tangible evidence of the creation of a truly single front, as shown by the British operating on the sea, the Italians and French leading the offensive in the centre while the Greek army is on the right flank.

50 years ago

The National Coal Board started work on clearing Dysart Harbour of silt yesterday. Their men, with three machines, arrived at 7am and worked until stopped by the tide in the afternoon. For the next two weeks they will be doing what they can to clear silt from the outer harbour basin. The Coal Board agreed to do the work after consultati­ons with Kirkcaldy Town Council. Dysart Sailing Club have been pressing for something to be done to bring the harbour back to the condition it used to be in.

St Andrews is hosting the centenary Intercity Scottish Chess Congress this week with entrants from eight countries bidding for a number of major titles. Organised by the Scottish Chess Associatio­n, the week-long event has attracted more than 160 players, said congress director Simon Kellett yesterday. Scotland’s two Grand Masters, Dr Colin McNab and Paul Motwani, will be joined by English Grand Master Mark Hebden and other leading players for a host of events.

The Scottish Government has reaffirmed its support for a Tay Cities Deal. During a visit to Dundee yesterday, Economy Secretary Keith Brown pledged the region will get its own deal “come what may”. Mr Brown confirmed the Scottish Government will deliver a regionalis­ed deal with or without the UK Government’s assistance. He said: “The Scottish Government will do a Tay Cities Deal come what may. It’s going to happen. “We hope the UK Government will do that as well.”
