The family of a young Arbroath man who was allegedly murdered at an Angus beauty spot last month have described the “overwhelming” support they have received in the weeks since his death.

Steven Donaldson’s parents spoke to The Courier as they made arrangements for the 27-year-old’s funeral in his home town today.

William and Pamela Donaldson are preparing to say goodbye to their 27-year-old son in a service at George Stewart Funeral Directors in Millgate Loan at 12.15pm.

The heartbroken couple said: “We have been overwhelmed by the cards and flowers we have received from family and friends.

“One of Steven’s friends set up a crowdfunding page which has raised £3,600.

“There were donations from a lot of people we don’t know.

“We thank everyone who donated to it and will use the money to pay for the funeral.”

The discovery of Steven’s body in the early hours of June 7 at the Loch of Kinnordy nature reserve, on the outskirts of Kirriemuir, sparked a major police investigation and an outpouring of grief on social media. Details of his funeral were posted on Facebook by his friend Faisal Naseem, who has led tributes to the popular oil worker.

He said: “It is with great heartache to say Steven’s funeral will be on the 23rd of July at 12.15pm at George Stewart’s. “It will open an hour beforehand. “Let’s give him the sending off he deserves even though it wasn’t meant to be.”

The post prompted many messages of support for Steven’s loved ones.

Dawn Robson said: “Thoughts and prayers to all his family and friends. Very sad time for you all.”

Jennifer Wallace added: “Such a sad time for all Steven’s family and friends ... Thoughts are with you all.”

Tasmin Glass, 19, from Kirriemuir, and 23-year-olds Callum Davidson and Steven Dickie, also from Kirriemuir, have been charged with Steven’s murder.

They have appeared twice, in private, at Forfar Sheriff Court and were remanded in custody.

Glass lodged a bid for release from detention on bail which was thrown out by a sheriff at the Sheriff Appeal Court in Edinburgh earlier this month.
