No repeat of mixed doubles title for Jamie as he loses final

Jamie Murray was denied backto-back Wimbledon mixed doubles titles after he and Victoria Azarenka lost a hardfought final on Centre Court.

The Scot and his new partner were beaten 7-6 (7/1) 6-3 by Austrian Alexander Peya and American Nicole Melichar.

Murray, who won 12 months ago with Martina Hingis, had not initially planned to play in this year’s mixed event, instead deciding to focus on the men’s doubles with Bruno Soares.

However, when the chance to partner Belarusian former world No 1 Azarenka arose, Murray jumped at the opportunity.

Murray and Azarenka found themselves under severe pressure in the first set, eventually holding serve in a marathon seven-deuce game for a 4-3 lead.

They managed to force a tiebreak, but the 11th seeds swept through it to take the lead.

Murray and Azarenka had fought back from a set down twice before to reach the final, but they could not mount another comeback as hopes of British success disappeared.

l Mike Bryan secured his first grand slam title in the men’s doubles since 2014 after winning Wimbledon with Jack Sock.

Bryan, 40, had played in 76 consecutive grand slams and won16titleswithhistwinbrother Bob before a hip injury ruled the latter out of the French Open earlier this summer.

Fellow American Sock stepped in and the new partnership tasted success.

They beat Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus 6-3 6-7 (7/9) 6-3 5-7 7-5 in close to four hours.

l Jack Draper fell at the final hurdle in his bid to become the first home winner of the Wimbledon boys’ singles title in 56 years.

The 16-year-old was beaten 6-1 6-7 (2/7) 6-4 by Tseng Chun-hsin.

l British wheelchair player Lucy Shuker and partner Sabine Ellerbrock were beaten 6-1 6-1 by Holland’s Diede De Groot and Japanese player Yui Kamiji in the women’s doubles final.

Jamie Murray missed out on second successive mixed title.
