Ex-Fife councillor Eleanor Gunstone

-

A former Fife councillor has died at the age of 91.

Eleanor Gunstone died in hospital following a short illness.

She served on both Fife Regional Council then Fife Council, standing down in 2007 after 21 years as an elected member.

She was also well known in sporting circles, and was an honorary life member of the Scottish Athletics Federation.

Her death came just a few months after she and husband Frank celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Born in Liverpool, Eleanor moved to Scotland in 1948 with Frank, a retired university lecturer.

They lived in Glasgow before flitting to Fife in 1954 when Frank took up a post at St Andrews University, where he later became vice-principal.

The couple had two sons and a daughter, Douglas, Penny and John, and Eleanor became involved in athletics through her children.

She helped train young athletes in St Andrews and officiated at athletics events over 40 years, receiving an award for her service from UK Athletics in 2014. Eleanor was among a group of people who set up a club in St Andrews in the 1970s which went on to become Fife Athletics Club.

She served as president of Fife AC and also with several national sporting bodies, including the SAF which she helped lead as a member of the interim council when it was formed in 1992.

She also acted as a track and field judge, referee and team manager at national sporting events and championships.

It was her interest in sport which inspired her political career.

She campaigned for a swimming pool in St Andrews, leading to a spell on St Andrews Town Council and also the establishment of the East Sands Leisure Centre.

Eleanor, who worked at the Gatty Marine Laboratory and was a graduate of the Open University, was a member of the North East Fife Liberal Democrats Association from 1958 and represented the Leuchars, Balmullo and Guardbridge ward until 2007.

She is survived by Frank, their children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
