A bed costing an eye-watering £75,000 has gone on display at a Dundee furniture shop.

The luxury bed, made with a type of wool said to be more expensive than gold, will be on show at Gillies in Broughty Ferry until Sunday.

Customers can order an identical copy to be custom-made for them.

Cashmere, silk, bamboo and wool from a vicuna, a rare and protected species, are just some of the materials used to make the mattress, which alone is priced at £40,000.

Don McBride, bedding manager at Gillies, said: “The bed is made by Vispring, which not a brand many people have heard of.

“They make luxury beds, and this particular one – the Diamond Majesty – that we have in store this week is doing a tour of the UK.

“I believe we’re the only store in Scotland to be chosen to have it.

“It will be here for a week, during which time people can make an appointment to try it out and get a complimentary glass of Champagne.

“There is no need to buy it, however, in theory people can place an order and a custom-made version will be made for them.”

Mr McBride acknowledged £75,000 would be out of most people’s budgets but said the store offers cheaper beds by the same company, priced between £4,000 and £15,000.

He added: “If you think about it, you spend at least seven hours every night sleeping.

“During that time it’s important that your body is getting good support in order to rest and be refreshed for the following day so why not set aside a high budget for that? What makes this bed so expensive is not only the materials used but the fact that it has four layers of pocket springs, whereas the average bed has just one.

“It also has four layers of luxurious material – cashmere, silk, bamboo and vicuna wool – whereas a normal bed will have one layer of cheaper wool.

“All of this ensures optimum support and comfort”.
