Forest to host Big Butterfly Count
Sir David Attenborough has urged people to visit Tentsmuir Forest next month to take part in the world’s largest butterfly survey.
The north-east Fife beauty spot is one of several across Scotland taking part in the Big Butterfly Count, which starts today and runs until the middle of next month.
A guided butterfly walk will be held on Saturday August 4 from 10am to 2.30pm.
The UK’s butterflies are basking in the best summer conditions for more than a decade, enabling various species to feed and breed.
Sir David said that as well as generating important data on butterflies, taking part in the survey would benefit the mental health of participants.
“Spending time with nature offers us all precious breathing space away from the stresses and strains of modern life,” he said.
“It enables us to experience joy and wonder, to slow down and to appreciate the wildlife that lives side by side with us,” he added.
Butterfly Conservation, an insect conservation organisation, is being supported by mental health charity Mind to champion the benefits of spending time in nature.
Stephen Buckley, head of information at Mind, said: “We have found that being in nature can have a powerful grounding effect, with research indicating that it can help alleviate mental health problems like depression and anxiety.”
