It might have been absent from the town for more than a decade, but surely the Open is destined to return to Carnoustie in the not too distant future. The Angus settlement was at its sparkling best over the last four days as the world’s finest golfers strutted their stuff on the famous old course.

Away from the links tills were ringing as, despite the controversial “no readmissions” policy, businesses proved they were more than ready to take full advantage of the extravaganza.

Doubtless the weather played its part as, despite some squally showers on the Friday morning, Scotland’s remarkably resilient heatwave ensured the course was bathed in sunshine for the vast majority of the time.

Courier Country is fortunate indeed to boast two Open venues, with St Andrews also a mainstay on the tournament rota.

Before the first ball was hit there was some disquiet expressed about Carnoustie’s ability to host such a monumental global event, but the doubters surely ended the week with tails firmly between legs.

The inconvenience was borne with patience by the vast majority and there is no doubt that the benefits outweighed the drawbacks by quite some margin.

The town, and indeed wider region, put on quite a show – and thoroughly deserves the rewards being reaped as a result.
