ARBROATH 2 ELGIN CITY 0

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell was happy with his team’s performance in the 2-0 Betfred Cup win over Elgin on Saturday but hopes to add a few more faces to his squad before the beginning of the league campaign.

The Lichties had signed Lewis Toshney on a loan deal from Dundee United only for the player to sustain a recurrence of a knee injury during his debut against Alloa last week.

Campbell said: “I have to admire the boy for his honesty.

“He came in to see me the day after the Alloa game and his knee was up like a balloon. It’s a real blow and I am so sorry for the lad.

“According to the experts he may have to pack in the game at this level. But Dundee United have been absolutely magnificent in dealing with it.

“We have signed Finn Graham today and he’ll add more quality but I still hope to bring in one or two others.”

There was also good news about striker Steven Doris who is heading back to fitness after being out for almost a year following a cruciate ligament injury.

Campbell said: “Doris should be ready to start kicking a ball in a few weeks and we hope he’ll be ready by early September.”

Colin Hamilton opened the Lichties’ account early in the second half when he ghosted into the six yard box to head home a Ryan Wallace corner.

The second goal again came from a set-piece, Tom O’Brien slotting home at the far post after a short corner wasn’t picked up.

Ricky Little then came close to a third with an effort which struck a post before Gavin Swankie hit the net only for an offside decision to be called.
