Search for missing Fife man ends in tragedy after body found.

Tributes have been paid after the search for missing Cowdenbeat­h man Steven Cunningham ended in tragedy.

Mr Cunningham, 48, was found dead in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, on Friday. He had been missing for 10 days.

Friends took to social media to remember Mr Cunningham, who went by the nickname Flea and was described as a “lovely guy”.

Greig Brown posted on Facebook: “It is with a heavy heart that I write to share the news that my friend Flea was found yesterday in Castle Douglas and is now at peace.

“I’d like to thank everyone for sharing my posts and all the messages I’ve received over the last week, this has not been an easy time for anybody especially his family.”

Mr Brown said Mr Cunningham was “a truly amazing man”.

Another friend said: “Heartbreak­ing news. So sorry to hear this. He was such a lovely guy.”

It is understood Mr Cunningham was a scooter enthusiast and a member of Dunfermlin­e Scooter Club.

He was reported missing on July 12, having last been seen two days before.

The next day a gun-metal grey Vauxhall Astra he had access to was seen heading northbound on the M6 near Penrith at around 1.25pm.

Last week his family made an emotional appeal for him to get in touch.

Over the weekend, police confirmed a body had been discovered by a member of the public in Dumfries and Galloway and that Mr Cunningham’s family had been informed.

A spokespers­on said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a body has sadly been found in the search for missing man Steven Cunningham, 48, from Cowdenbeat­h.

“A member of the public discovered the body of a man near to the Loch Ken area of Dumfries on Friday evening.

“Formal identifica­tion is yet take place.

“However, Mr Cunningham’s family have been informed.

“The death is being treated as unexplaine­d but not suspicious,” the spokespers­on added.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
