Thunderstorms won’t stop Rita Ora fans tonight

Pop lovers set to flood Slessor Gardens, along with the rain, for singer

Forecast rain and thunder is unlikely to dampen the spirits of up to 10,000 music fans in Dundee this evening at Slessor Gardens.

Rita Ora lovers will show they are willing to go Anywhere for their pop favourite, at the second of three summer concerts held at the city’s newest concert venue.

The I Will Never Let You Down singer follows ’90s pop-masters Steps who had the gardens jumping last month, before ’80s rockers Simple Minds do their thing in September – just days before the V&A opens.

Drivers are being reminded that a number of road closures will be put in place from this afternoon, with Earl Grey Place, South Crichton Street, South Castle Street, Dock Street (from Union Street to Commercial Street) and Thomson Avenue all closing to traffic from 3pm.

The roads are due to reopen at midnight.

Bus services will be rerouted in an attempt to ease congestion around the venue.

Xplore Dundee managing director Christine McGlasson said: “We are urging everyone attending the concert to take the bus as this will be the quickest and easiest way to travel into the city centre and get home again after the party.

“But if you’re commuting to work or planning a shopping trip it’s also a good idea to use our services – the fewer cars on the road on Saturday, the less traffic will build up and we’ll all get to where we need to be a lot quicker.”

Services 5, 9 and 9a will run via Hawkhill instead of Perth Road towards Ninewells Hospital.

The service 17 will run via Hawkhill in both directions and the 22 (towards Craigowl) will stop on Ward Road at the former post office instead of at Albert Square.

Concert promoter Liz Hobbs Group this week was forced to defend slashing tickets for tonight’s show.

The cost of single briefs were reduced by almost 60% – leaving fans who paid the full amount furious.

The Liz Hobbs Group issued a statement defending the price cut, saying it was delighted the allocation of tickets had been so well received.
