Red Cattle Society is shown Scottish herds

-

Members of the Lincoln Red Cattle Society were in Scotland last weekend (July 21-22) to visit two of the breed’s leading herds.

On Saturday 30 breeders, most of whom had travelled from Lincolnshire and other parts of England, were at Auchmacoy near Ellon to see Sharon Buchan’s herd of 80 Lincoln Red cows.

The herd produced the reserve supreme champion Auchmacoy Victor and the junior champion Auchmacoy Vincent at this year’s National Premier Sale in Newark.

On Sunday the group was at St Fort, Newport, and was joined by another 40 breeders and commercial beef farmers, including visitors from Northern Ireland and Orkney.

The St Fort herd is run by Andrew Mylius, his wife Hilary and his eldest son Casper. It was founded in 1963 and at the moment numbers more than 80 cows with their followers.

The visitors inspected a group of 15-16-monthold bulls intended for sale this autumn and next spring. Five are by the home-bred St Fort Squire, by Norton Beau, and two by Beverley Noble, a former breed champion.

Beverley Noble was bred by Lincoln Red Cattle Society chairman Martin Clough from Spilsby, who was at St Fort on Sunday.

The weekend turned out to only be the start of an eventful week for the society. On Wednesday the breed was to win its first ever interbreed championship at the Royal Welsh Show with the heifer Donnington Jessie owned by Edward Middleton and bred by Mr G Parkinson of Lincolnshire.
