Millions of people around the world experience Dundee’s innovative past, present and future every day when they withdraw money or check their bank balance on an ATM.

More than 40 years ago, NCR developed and built its first automated teller machine right here in Dundee.

Since then, more than 3.2 million have been installed around the world.

NCR is a truly global company with more than 30,000 employees in 180-plus countries.

Our team in Dundee provides advanced solutions to the financial industry across the globe, while also working hard to invest and support the local community.

NCR maintains a very strong presence in the city, with the opening of our research and development centre of excellence – the Discovery Centre – in 2001.

More than 500 people are based here, at one of the company’s key strategic R&D sites.

NCR started out in the late 19th Century as the National Manufacturing Company of Dayton, Ohio, to manufacture and sell the first mechanical cash register invented in 1879 by James Ritty.

In 1884, the company and patents were bought by John Henry Patterson and his brother, Frank Jefferson Patterson, and the firm was renamed the National Cash Register Company.

NCR has always looked for good opportunities to grow, invest and invent.

Through the European recovery programme established after the Second World War, company executives were determined to find the ideal spot for a UK-based manufacturing plant.

According to legend, Dundee was chosen after NCR executive Nelson T Carne was scouting sites when he witnessed the uplifting sight of pheasants rising from a potato field.

The Tayside plant opened in 1946 and, in less than two decades, expanded from 65,000 square feet to 150,000 sq ft and from one factory to six.

Initially, the site focused on manufacturing cash registers, adding machines and electronic dataprocessing equipment.

There was a turning point in 1977 when the Dundee-based team designed and manufactured its first ATM model – the 770.

The focus of the site then became ATM design, manufacturing and shipping. Around 1.7 million ATMs designed in Dundee have since been shipped across the world.

Last year, the Dundee team was vital to the launch of NCR’s SelfServ 80 Series ATM family – the most advanced ATM technology which NCR has produced to date.

Our Tayside team has leveraged decades of industry and customer knowledge, intelligence and expertise to bring the next generation of ATM technology to the world.

Local employees work together to ensure the next generation of ATMs offers more features and usability than ever before, with skills ranging across hardware and software engineering, new product engineering, usability and consumer experience design, solution management, marketing, finance and sales.

The Dundee centre is focused on design and innovation for banks and financial institutions globally.

NCR’s global product management and marketing teams are also based in the city – and work with customers to understand business needs and requirements, so we can continue to build solutions that fill market gaps.

The Tayside site also includes our executive briefing centre, which sees an average of 150 customers visiting every year. These customers come from all around the world to discuss their business strategy with the experts in NCR and to see first-hand NCR’s latest solutions from both our software and hardware portfolios whilst also experiencing great Scottish hospitality.

Meanwhile, we continue to grow and expand our Dundee partnerships, capabilities and workforce.

Adam Crighton, NCR’s VP of financial services based in Dundee, said: “We are thrilled that NCR Dundee is a launch sponsor of V&A Dundee, Scotland’s first design museum.

“Our local team also works very closely with Scottish Enterprise, local universities and schools to engage local professionals, graduates and interns.

“As NCR grows as a global company, we pride ourselves on the innovative spirit, community involvement and collaboration from the Dundee-based employees, which continues to have a positive impact on the city.”
