A lorry driver has died after apparently taking unwell at the wheel of his vehicle on a Fife road.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle veered off the A823 near the entrance to the Knockhill Racing Circuit. The incident sparked a full scale emergency response with an air ambulance, police, fire and ambulance crews rushing to the scene shortly after 4.30pm yesterday.

The driver’s name was not released last night but a spokesperson at DX Logistics, where he worked, said: “We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the tragic death of the driver today.

“Our sympathy and condolences are with their family and friends at this time.”

A lorry driver has died after apparently taking unwell at the wheel of his vehicle on a busy Fife road.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, police, fire and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene near the Knockhill Racing Circuit shortly after 4.30pm yesterday.

The lorry was the only vehicle involved in the incident on the A823 and diversions were quickly put in place.

At the time a police spokesperson said the HGV had slipped off the road and an air ambulance was in attendance.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police remained tight-lipped throughout the evening, saying only that they were dealing with a “serious incident” and that it was a medical matter.

The name of the driver was not released last night but a spokesperson at DX Logistics, where he worked, said: “We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the tragic death of the driver today.

“Our sympathy and condolences are with their family and friends at this time.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the lorry had crashed into a ditch.

He said: “The driver, an adult male, was out of the vehicle before we arrived.

“The ambulance service was on the scene and the air ambulance en route.”

He said the service was alerted to the incident at 4.31pm.

Operations control immediately mobilised three fire engines from Alloa, Dunfermline and Lochgelly, along with a heavy rescue unit, to the incident.

The service remained at the scene for more than two hours.

The A823 was the scene of a serious accident on July 8, this time involving a motorcycle and a car outside Knockhill Racing Circuit.

Emergency services attended the scene after the two-vehicle collision on the A823 between Hill End and Knockhill. A motorcyclist suffered extensive injuries and was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for further treatment.
