Injured Greene to return as captain
Former world champion Dai Greene will captain Great Britain’s squad at the European Championships in Berlin.
The 2011 400 metre hurdles world champion has recovered from several injuries which have forced him out of major championships, including the Rio Olympics, since 2013.
He will compete in the 400m hurdles heats on Tuesday and admitted he was surprised to get the nod after the 101-strong British team voted for him to be skipper.
Greene said: “After such a long time out of the team, it came as quite a shock to be selected as captain for the European Championships by my teammates. I am incredibly proud to take on the role once again.
“I can’t wait to lead such a great team into the Championships in Berlin next week.”
Greene pulled out of Wales’ Commonwealth Games squad with a groin injury just before the championships in Australia in April.
He lost his funding in 2016 after being omitted from British Athletics’ worldclass performance programmes for 2017.
Neil Black, British Athletics performance director, said: “I am delighted for Dai that he has been chosen to captain the British team.
“Dai is enjoying a great season after a difficult period of time with injury and it is testament to his determination and character that his peers have chosen him for such an honour.”
