From pig-racing to fly balling, there’s fun for everyone

The 188th Kinross Show will take place next weekend at Loch Leven and promises a packed programme with something to entertain the entire family.

From trade stands, entertainment in the main ring, food and drink, a flower show, dog show, and impressive livestock as well as activities for children, there will be plenty on offer at the RSPB Scotland venue on August 11.

Jane Drysdale is in her first year as show secretary, having taken over from Mary Morgan who held the position for 14 years. She spent most of last year in the role of assistant secretary learning the ropes.

Jane explained: “I have been going to Kinross Show for over 30 years; firstly, when I was a young girl showjumping and later – when I married my husband, John, who has an agricultural business – selling tractors and quads and other farming machinery.

“We have been trade exhibitors for 30 years and I provided hospitality for our customers. Taking over as secretary has been very demanding, with many challenges – but it will be very rewarding when I see the show on Friday night all set up and ready to go.

“Hopefully the sun will shine as this makes a difference. What a great site we have, the view over Loch Leven is spectacular.”

Kinross Show moved to its present site at the reserve on the southern banks of Loch Leven in 2012 from its original setting at Kinross House. Admission for adults is £10, £7 for concession and children under 16 are free.

Jane reckons the planning has been an enjoyable but busy experience with not enough hours in the day.

She said: “I brought a few new ideas to this year’s show. The biggest is the new entertainment area, where we are trying to provide a stage for local talent.

“Hopefully, this will grow from strength to strength like the children’s education marquee.”

This year visitors can see superb quality livestock, horses and ponies, visit a variety of trade stands and watch the annual vintage tractor display and dog show. In the main ring there is pig racing and flyball fun.

To coincide with the Year of Young People 2018, all the trade stands have been asked to make a special effort to involve young people in some way.

There’s the Scottish Women’s Institutes marquee, art and craft marquee, flower show marquee and – new for this year – an entertainment tent.

In the children’s marquee, youngsters can try out various activities and see lots of animals including young chicks, ducks, alpacas, ferrets and donkeys.

Jane added: “I am looking forward to seeing that all my hard work pays off, everything goes well and to plan.”
