YMCA praised in parliament
Glenrothes YMCA’s 60th anniversary has been marked in the Scottish Parliament.
MSPs congratulated the organisation and the team’s excellent work across the town, which includes supporting young people, vulnerable people facing homelessness and the community as a whole.
The move followed a motion by Glenrothes SNP MSP Jenny Gilruth calling on colleagues to help celebrate the milestone.
She said the YMCA was one of the largest voluntary organisations in the town. It offers a host of vital services for the community and has managed homeless accommodation since 1992.
Early last year it secured funding from the Big Lottery to support the delivery of the “Y” Academy, which has a long-term goal to increase stability for people affected by homelessness and to help them maintain future tenancies.
Ms Gilruth said: “The YMCA was the first charity of its kind to offer shelter and support for vulnerable young homeless people in my constituency.
“Today Glenrothes YMCA provides temporary accommodation for up to 59 people each night in hostels and shared flats across Glenrothes and the surrounding areas.”
She added: “I would like to congratulate all of Glenrothes YMCA’s staff on this significant milestone and for all that they do to support some of Fife’s most vulnerable folk.”
Ms Gilruth wished the team continued success in the future.
